Mary Baptist Russell inspired sculpture in Sacramento's Capital Park

Welcome to Our Website...

On behalf of the Sisters and the Associates, I wish to welcome you to the website of the Auburn. California, Mercy Associates. As a component of the West Midwest Area of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, we welcome your interest and participation with us in our works of Mercy.

The website provides a summary of the information about who we are, where we come from, where we are, and what we do. We invite you to review our story and history, and consider bringing your gifts, treasures and talents, to join us in prayer and in service to the marginalized in our greater communities.

Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Gold Country, the Sisters residing in Auburn have a long, colorful history in this part of California. In 1857 Mother Mary Baptist Russell brought a small group to Sacramento to begin a school. Their ministry grew to health care and service to all those who didnít find the streets paved with gold.

The photo above depicts the sculpture commemorating the work of Mother Mary Baptist Russell in serving women and children in Northern California during the Gold Rush. The bronze sculpture adorns the grounds of both the State Capital in Sacramento and Our Lady of Mercy in Auburn.

In 1940, the Sisters moved to Our Lady of Mercy in Auburn. Initially a novitiate, Our Lady of Mercy serves as a retirement center for our Sisters. There is also a retreat center where persons of all faiths gather to feed their spiritual needs.

There are currently 54 Mercy Associates of Auburn. They represent much of the geography of Northern California, from Ripon to Red Bluff, and are as diverse a group as the populations they serve. Many Associates and I find in our Mercy Association the combination of contemplation and action that is missing in many of our 21st Century lives.

Informational gatherings are held annually to introduce interested men and women to the Associates. Over a cup of tea or glass of wine, seekers may meet others who have found in the Mercy Associates of Auburn a spiritual kinship and opportunities to pray and to serve of which they may not have been aware. Applications are received on an on-going basis, however, they must be received by July 31, for consideration in the discernment process for the covenant ceremony, held in September on Mercy Day, the following year.

If you have questions, or need additional information, please contact us through the website contact us page.

If you are interested in joining us, please complete the application and return this completed form to:

Mercy Associates Membership Team P.O. Box 293018 Sacramento, CA 95829-3018

We look forward to hearing from you.

In Mercy,

Ann Marie Dufour
